CAPITOL THEATRE    50 West 200 South    Opened: 1913 (as Orpheum)    Renamed in: 1927    Closed: Still Open

Originally built as the Orpheum Theatre in 1913, then renamed as the Capitol Theatre in 1927, this landmark in downtown Salt Lake City was designed by Albert G. Lansburgh, a graduate from the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris.

Originally designed for vaudeville and as part of the Orpheum Theatre chain, this historic theater was later converted to a motion picture house and showed movies for close to 50 years.

Renovated in the late seventies, the theater was restored back to its original form and became home for Ballet West, the Utah Opera, Children’s Dance Theatre, and a variety of hit broadway shows.

In 2012 the Capitol Theatre went through additional renovations, set for completion in 2013, to mark the 50th anniversary of the historic landmark.
