CENTRE THEATER    300 South State Street    Opened: 1937    Closed: 1989

The Centre Theater on the northwest corner of State Street and 3rd South (Broadway) opened on December 24, 1937. With its Art Deco style architecture and 90 foot high tower, that rose high above the marquee, the Centre Theater was an incredible site to see.

The Centre Theater was designed to be one of the most up to date theaters in the country and had a fully equipped stage, as well as, the latest motion picture equipment there was. Following a new trend to eliminate large balconies, most of the seating was on the main floor with only a small balcony above. Originally the theater had 1623 seats but in 1959 the seating was reduced to 1174, after a new 56 foot screen was installed.

The building was demolished in 1989 so that the block could be redesigned with a new office tower. The new office building is the home to six screen multiplex theater, name the Broadway.
